Constraints on the Galactic Corona Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts From the 3B Catalogue

چکیده
We investigate the viability of Galactic corona models of gammaray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution expected for a population of high-velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk and moving in a gravitational potential that includes the Galactic bulge, disk, and a dark matter halo. We consider models in which the bursts radiate isotropically and in which the radiation is beamed. We place constraints on the models by comparing the resulting brightness and angular distributions with the data in the BATSE 3B catalog. We find that, if the burst sources radiate isotropically, the Galactic corona model can reproduce the BATSE peak flux and angular distributions for neutron star kick velocities >∼ 800 km s, source turn-on ages >∼ 20 Myrs, and BATSE sampling distances 130 kpc <∼ dmax <∼ 350 kpc. If the radiation is beamed, no turn-on age is required and agreement with the BATSE data can be found provided that the width of the beam is <∼ 20◦.

Gamma - Ray Bursts from High - Velocity Neutron Stars
We investigate the viability of Galactic corona models of gamma-ray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution expected for a population of high-velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk and moving in a gravitational potential that includes contributions from the bulge, disk, and dark matter halo of our Galaxy and also from these same components of our neighboring galaxy M31. We cons...
متن کاملGalactic Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) continue to confound astrophysicists nearly a quarter century after their discovery (1). Before the launch of CGRO, most scientists thought that GRBs came from magnetic neutron stars residing in a thick disk (having a scale height of up to ∼ 2 kpc) in the Milky Way (2,3). The data gathered by BATSE showed the existence of a rollover in the cumulative brightness distribut...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Bursts from Radio-Quiet Quasars
We study positional coincidences between gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE 3B catalogue and quasars/AGN taken from the Véron-Cetty & Véron compilation. For most classes of AGN, for BL Lac objects and for radio-loud quasars, we find no excess coincidences above random expectation, and we give upper limits for their burst emission rate. However, surprising evidence is found for a positional correlati...

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...
متن کاملDetecting gamma-ray bursts from M31 with the wide field X-ray cameras on board BeppoSAX
Gamma-ray bursters emit a small fraction of their flux in X rays, and because X-ray detectors are often very sensitive they may probe the gamma-ray burst universe more deeply than the current best gamma-ray instruments. On the reasonable assumptions that spectra of bursts observed by BATSE may be used to predict the X-ray fluxes of gamma-ray bursts, and that any corona of bursts around M31 is s...
